Willie Nelson Fights Back Tears As His Friends Honor Him With Rendition Of ‘Seven Spanish Angels’. Willie Nelson isn’t someone known for wearing formal attire.
The country and western legend mostly appears dressed as an “average person” in blue jeans and a t-shirt, in public as well as on stage. But he donned a more somber look for a special reason. Nelson ventured to Washington, D.C. to receive the Gershwin Prize. The full name of the award is the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, and Willie Nelson added the 2015 version of the award to his many accolades.
The event involves more than just delivering the prize to the intended recipient. Fellow entertainers and music legends pay their respects to the guest of honor. A number of stars threw their hats at Nelson. Perhaps the highlight of the night was a rendition of “Seven Spanish Angels” that nearly brought Nelson to tears.
The singer’s classic was performed by musicians Alison Krauss and Jamie Johnson, Nelson’s friends. The performance delighted Nelson as he was overcome with emotion. The original duet that made the song famous was Nelson and Ray Charles.
The two recorded and released the song in 1984. The release made headlines as it gave Charles his biggest country hit.
Alas, Nelson’s problems with the IRS were publicized years ago and have generated nothing but disturbing and embarrassing press. Fortunately, his fans can see past those events, and news reports don’t delve into stories about his tax problems.

Nelson continues to make news for his accomplishments. Not only has Willie Nelson won a major award for his career as an artist, he recently received another degree in his Tae Kwon Do black belt. Although he doesn’t tour as much as he used to, you can tell the inspirational superstar likes to be active.
